Robert Pattinson proporcionó una extensa y bastante reveladora entrevista a la revista Rolling Stone, en la que confesó que interpretó a un Edward Cullen mucho más “bestial” que el de Stephanie Meyer, también dijo que lo sorprende la energía sexual que tienen las niñas de ocho años cuando le piden que las muerda y muchas cosas que esperabas conocer…

¿Cuán diferentes son las fans de Harry Potter de las de Twilight? Creo que mencionaste que incluso el sonido de los gritos era diferente.
Es diferente porque creo que la únicamente provienen de mujeres de un determinado grupo de edad, y tienen un tono muy específico. Tiene mucho más que ver con la clase de sexualidad que tienen [las películas]. Muchas chicas hicieron de este chico su ideal, así que cuando te ven es como que proyectan toda la energía en tí. Es una experiencia muy extraña. Nunca tuve ninguna experiencia en la que la gente sólo quiera tocarte. Es como estar en una boy band
¿Es extraño que chicas muy jóvenes tengan esta increíble cosa sexual contigo?
Es raro cuando una niña de 8 años viene a tí y te dice, ‘¿Puedes morderme? Solamente quiero que me muerdas’. Es realmente extraño cómo son las chicas jóvenes, considerando que el libro está basado en las virtudes de la castidad. Pero supongo que produjo el efecto contrario el los lectores [Risas]
¿Piensas que eso es parte de esto? Una de las cosas que hace a Edward tan atractivo para las chicas jóvenes es que puedes tenerlo en ambos sentidos: Es el último modelo de chico malo, y alguien a quien no deberías querer, pero que sabes que nunca te hará daño.
Exactamente eso es lo que él es. Es un cierto ideal para las chicas. No sé lo que es, cuando buscas en los fan sites (puedes decir), pero hay definitivamente muchísima gente, de hecho sólo la gente de USA, que quiere a este tipo de chicos. En el libro ella sabe todo el tiempo que él no va a lastimarla, pero Kristen (Stewart) y yo tratamos de hacerlo sin preocuparnos demasiado, queríamos hacerlo imprevisible. Es lo que me gustaba sobre la historia, que él literalmente se detiene cada vez, nunca se deja ir.
El es un personaje muy caballero, y Kristen y yo enfatizamos mucho, muchísimo eso, especialmente en las escenas íntimas. Cuando hicimos las escenas de los besos, fuimos más lejos de lo que la directora, Catherine [Hardwicke] pensó.
¿Y por qué quisieron llevar esas escenas a esa dirección?
Creo que como una forma de asustar a las niñas pequeñas [Risas]. Quiero decir, la gente que leyó el libro no se lo esperaría, y para una persona joven que ve la película, es también algo shockeante. Cuando leí esa escena en el libro pensé que era algo sexy, y cuando lo transfieres a una película, el beso es tan pequeño que es como algo que ves es una serie de TV. Así que pensé, ‘¿Cómo podemos hacer que esto esté en el borde de lo malo?’.
Creo que mucha gente juzgó la película incluso antes de que empezemos a rodarla, y yo no quería ser parte de un film que se hacía sólo para hacer dinero. Así que tratamos de tomar la mayor cantidad de riesgos que pudimos, y tratamos de hacerlo un poco más serio de lo que la gente se esperaba. Es difícil tomar tantos riesgos.
¿Cuáles son lo riesgos que quisiste tomar que al final no pudiste hacer?
Edward constantemente está diciendo, ‘Soy un monstruo, soy un monstruo, soy un monstruo’, y no termina siendo uno. Filmamos la escena final al principio, y quería que la pelea no sea sólo una pelea, así que literalmente lo convertimos en un monstruo. En el libro muchas veces salva el día siendo el héroe, pero noté que cuando estábamos rodando la escena, era la primera vez que él ve mucha sangre de ella, y pensé que sería interesante para él si empezara queriendo matarla y luego peleando contra él mismo por eso.
Hay una parte que cortamos en el PG-13 [Para mayores de 13 años], en la parte cuando empiezo a ganar hay muchos trucos, pero esos trucos están tan prolongados que no puedes ver lo que Kristen y yo quisimos hacer, que es literalmente matarla. En ese punto, es cuando te has convertido en la bestia. Luego hay una escena en donde trato de atacar, en la que mi padre [Carlisle] me dice que pare. Creo que es él quien me mira diciéndome, ‘Pensé que eras el único. Sos mi protegido, y realmente, realmente no”
Luego de esa parte en la película, él ciertamente vé quien realmente es, y no hay forma de que haya un final feliz. Quería hacerlo realmente, realmente depresivo. Como una forma de irme más y más lejos del libro mientras lo recojía en pequeños pedacitos
Creo que a mucha gente a la que le gusta el libro y la historia de amor quedará desconcertada por eso. Pero también pienso que es el mejor tipo de historia de amor, en donde todo el tiempo el sabe lo que piensa y sabe cuántas dudas tiene, y tiene muchas cosas respecto a su debilidad. Como, él no puede suicidarse porque tiene miedo de no tener un alma. No puede ser un verdadero vampiro vegetariano, no puede ser un verdadero vampiro, no puede ser un verdadero hombre, no puede ser nada, y es como, está completamente impotente sobre todo. Luego encuentra esta única cosa, que lo hace sentir vivo, y ni siquiera puede protegerla. No puede hacer nada. El piensa que él es un insignificante ser humano…bueno, cosa.
Correcto…
Luego eso se vuelve mucho más increíble en el segundo libro [New Moon] cuando ambos literalmente podrían haber muerto cuando se dejaron, y quise hacerlo como las clases de cosas de la ópera Carmen. Al mismo tiempo puedes ir y complacer a otra gente [Risas], y no puedes deprimirte mucho con eso por el libro
Quería tocar tres momentos: Cuando salva su vida y al tocarla se hiere, cuando se besan luego de que quiera matarla, y cuando está succionando su sangre y tiene mucho miedo de matarla. Luego el director me dio una copia del libro en donde estaban subrayadas todas las veces en las que él sonríe y las veces en las que la toca. Así que…
Stephanie Meyer habló de mucha influencia de la literatura Victoriana, que definitivamente es obvia en Twilight, incluso que el nombre del personaje sea Edward. ¿Crees que hay cualidades victorianas en Edward?
Sí, definitivamente creo que hay muchísmo de Heathcliff.
¿Qué hay de atractivo en hacer un personaje que lo hizo famoso y que incluso ahora lo hace famoso?
Es incomprendible. Es atractivo en las mujeres que sea algo místico. Es muy obvio, pero muy poca gente lo tiene, especialmente en personajes actuales y más especialmente en una sociedad moderna en donde hay muchas celebridades
Estás en esa posición en donde estás interpretando a este personaje que es atractivo por su mística y luego no tiene ese lujo.
Desaparece. No hace ninguna diferencia. Pero no lo interpreté muy antiguo; traté de incorporar pequeñas cosas. Creo que hay muy pocos personajes jovenes en los films modernos que incluso tienen todas las formas de resticciones, a menos que sean unos chiflados. Supongo que Edward sería un atleta en una historia normal, simplemente actuando normal, no puedes modificarlo. Todo está tan subestimado
¿Por qué crees que él encuentra atractiva a Bella?
Creo que es una progresión. La forma en que lo hizo, todas las cosas realmente fueron una sorpresa para él. Tiene tantos problemas. El dejó de matar gente hace 50 años, y ella viene y es como, ‘Oh, no puedo controlarme!’ Pensé que lo que él pensaría sería, ‘Esta f*cking niña no va a arruinarme’, como, ‘Ella no es mejor que yo y puedo controlar mis instintos’. Y entonces la relación comenzó como una prueba del poder que él tenía sobre sí mismo.
Es como, ‘Puedo ir un poco más cerca de ella, y más cerca, y más cerca, y más cerca’, y luego se alegra cuando él es como, ‘Mira, pude controlar mis instintos otra vez’. Luego es gracioso cómo él ve que queriendo matarla se siente vivo, de alguna forma. Y es por eso que ella se convierte en alguien tan importante, porque la única cosa que él quería hacer antes, era ser un ser humano y morir.
No hay forma de enclavijar la historia. Realmente nunca entendí el camino que atraviesa. Entiendo el personaje de Edward. Pero nunca entendí sobre qué era Bella. Realmente lo intenté, y trabajé en eso con Kristen por años. Hay definitivamente algunas características de las chicas jóvenes, que son muy, muy extrañas y que realmente no son exploradas en las películas. Los adolescentes problemáticos, especialmente las chicas, en las películas están vistos desde una sola dimensión, lo que es ridículo. Y luego tienen alguien con quien acoplarse al final. Mientras que en Twilight ella no se acopla, simplemente tiene adicción.
Ella es tan correcta al comienzo y luego se convierte en una persona completamente dependiente; incluso en la última escena de la película, ella está diciendo, “Nunca digas que me vas a dejar”. Eso es lo que hace a la historia tan inusual; cuando lo lees en valor nominal y dices, ‘Oh, es una lectura ligera’. Puedes leerlo en una horas y será cursi, pero tan pronto como mires tendrás que hacer saltos masivos y sumarle puntos al personaje. Así que terminé de ponerle miles y miles de pensamientos a eso, sólo para que no sea la película cursi y para hacer dinero fácil que el 95% de las personas probablemente esté esperando.
¿Crees que es por eso que tiene miles de personas que la siguen, porque ella al final no se acopla, y la gente se puede identificar con eso?
La gente quiere leer desesperadamente el próximo libro porque ella es una persona diferente. Aunque sea algo sólido el terminar en un final, se siente como si le faltara un tiempo. No he leído el cuarto, así que todavía no se cómo termina, pero definitivamente me gusta la transición del primero al segundo. El segundo es uno de mis favoritos, a pesar de que estoy muy poco en el.
¿Tuviste alguna situación en donde las fans te enviaron algo loco o muy extremo?
Me enviaron muchos libros de Cientología. Es bastante gracioso, de hecho, casi la serie completa en Dianetics. [Esa fan] Quería que me convierta a la cientología. Pero debió costarle bastante con todo ese paquete. Y también me enviaron un hermoso libro con las típicas notas de amor. Creo que fue increíble.
¿Qué decían?
Cosas bastante similares, ‘¿Te casarás conmigo?’ y esa clase de cosas. Creo que fue bastante impresionante, porque fueron como cientos de páginas.
¿Lo leíste todo?
Sí, bastante. Quiero decir, hay sólo mucha adoración que puedes tomar antes de pensar, ‘¿debo estar agradecido, o debo decirle que sí a una de estar personas? [Risas]
¿Crees que la gente tiene problemas distinguiendo entre tu personaje y tu?
Sí. Entonces se avergüenzan mucho y dicen, “Perdón! Te llamé Edward” [Risas] Pienso que la gente quiere algo en lo que pueda poner sus ideas. En Italia [Luego del estreno de la película], era literalmente estar dentro de la película. Pero probablemente eso sea algo bueno.
Dijiste que cuando entras a los fan-sites tienen más o menos la misma opinion.
Tengo muchos e-mails de mi agente diciendo que los fans envían quejas sobre mi seguridad y todo eso, y son realmente muy profesionales escribiendo. Es algo sobre los fans de los libros, que obviamente son mucho más literarios. Cuando estás con la multidud de fans, todos son como, ‘Te amamos!’. Pero cuando se trata de las cartas y esas cosas, son de no creer. Y eso es lo más sorprendente de todo. Son increíblemente buenos escribiendo, todos tienen muy buen vocabulario y corrijen la gramática de lo que el otro dijo. Es algo gracioso.
Realmente no sé como se define a un grupo de gente, pero siempre piensas, “Sos un fan obsesivo, pero pareces ser una persona lógica, así que no entiendo cómo las dos cosas van juntas”
¿Te contactan adolescentes gays?
Realmente no. Está creciendo más y más el número de los fans varones heterosexuales que los gays, a menos que mi radar gay no esté funcionando bien. Eso empezó hace poco. Son algo vergonzosos los fans varones, pero igualmente van a las firmas de libros y esas cosas. Estoy tan acostumbrado a escribirle a las chicas, que siempre les escribo: “Amor, romance, y besos, besos, besos”, así que tengo que tacharlo y ponerles al lado: “Oh, perdón por eso”
Cuéntame sobre la experiencia que tuviste cuando un fan se escondió y se quedó mirandote mientras trabajabas en el set
Es simplemente raro. Quiero decir, otra vez, son todos buena gente. Parece completamente lógico para ellos entender por qué están allí: ‘Nos gusta. Queremos verlo’. Y son muy contundentes sobre eso. Creo que si empezamos a rodar ahora, sería una historia totalmente diferente. La multitud creció y creció y creció mientras estábamos rodando; estarían fuera del set toda la noche mientras trabajamos.
Pero hay algo diferente al ser parte de este grupo, a pesar de que la gente grite como en los shows de los Jonas Brothers.
Sí, y lo defienden, también. No quieren ser asociados con otros grupos. Como, vos ves pequeños mensajes y esas cosas, y en donde tenga publicidad negativa, verás unos 400 mensajes diciendo cosas como, ‘Cállate! Solamente subes estas cosas para que la gente venga y se fije en tu página web’. No lo sé. Nunca esperé nada de eso con este trabajo [Risas]
¿Quiénes crees que son más intensas, las fans jóvenes o las madres Twilight?
Las cartas más intensas y esas cosas vienen de la gente joven. Las cartas del tipo, ‘Me suicidaré….’ Eso es siempre un poquito más preocupante. Pero las madres Twilight están en todos lados. Es increíble. Cada una de las veces que hacemos una presentación siempre están frente a las vallas, y compran las entradas por adelantado. Es bastante intenso. Siempre son muy amables y no parecen volverse locas cuando te conocen. Simplemente les gustan los libros
Hay tan poca literatura destinada a las chicas, que cuando aparece una se vuelve muy exitosa. Definitivamente hay una especie de clan de mentalidad compartida entre los fans, y la gente quiere ser parte de ese grupo. Les gusta defender al libro, porque muchos piensan que es cursi, y yo pienso que mucha de esa mentalidad se debe justamente al libro, a que sea un libro de género fantasía.
Pero entonces los que están fuera de ese clan no están tan afuera.
Ya no. Cuando se unen son increíblemente poderosos. Mientras la película se estaba haciendo y salimos en muchas tapas de revista, mucha gente pensó que estaba bien, entonces más y más gente compró el libro; esa es la razón por la que no me siento mal por la publicidad, porque no es como que si alguien te forzara, para nada. La razón por la que estuvimos en los Video Music Awards fue porque los fans nos mandaron muchísimos mails pidiéndonoslo. No es que alguien te está pagando, fue todo porque los fans quisieron, y eso está fuera del alcanze de nuestras manos.
